Mykali Beach is located on the southeastern side of Samos, south of Palaiokastro and west of Psili Ammos. It is one of the largest beaches on the island, with a coastline approximately 3.2 kilometres long and an average width estimated at around 15 metres.

Its great length, medium-sized light-coloured pebbles and clear turquoise waters allow visitors to choose between the organised areas in the central section and the quieter, more open zones towards both ends. Even when visitor numbers increase, the extensive coastline helps spread swimmers across the beach.

📍 Location

Mykali extends along the southeastern coast of Samos, in the wider Palaiokastro–Psili Ammos area. It lies approximately 8 kilometres east of Pythagoreio and around 10–12 kilometres by road from Samos Town, depending on the exact section of the large beach selected by the visitor.

The beach is not accessed from only one point. Roads and smaller access routes lead to different parts of the shore, while the main organised section lies close to the point reached by the principal road route from Samos Town and Pythagoreio.

🏝️ The Coastline and Its Great Length

Mykali does not look the same throughout its entire length. In some places, the shore is wider and fully organised, while in others it becomes narrower and retains a more natural character. Its size creates several smaller zones that differ in terms of organisation, shade and visitor activity.

The central section contains most of the sun loungers, dining establishments and water activities. Towards the east and west, there are larger free areas suitable for visitors seeking more space and tranquillity.

🌿 The Natural Environment and Protected Area

Low vegetation, tamarisk trees and, in places, larger trees grow behind the coast and provide limited natural shade. The shaded areas do not cover the whole beach and are occupied quickly during hot summer days.

The beach lies beside the Natura 2000 protected area known as “Samos: Alyki Beach”, with site code GR4120001. The protected area includes important coastal and marine habitats, such as Mediterranean seagrass meadows, coastal lagoons, dune systems and Mediterranean vegetation.

🏖️ The Shore and Its Composition

The shore consists mainly of medium-sized white and light-coloured pebbles. Smaller pebbles and finer gravel appear in some places, but Mykali is not a sandy beach across most of its length.

The composition of the shore may vary slightly along the 3.2-kilometre coastline. Near some organised areas, the pebbles are more uniform, while the more natural sections may contain larger stones and deposits of natural material moved by winter waves.

Water shoes offer greater comfort when walking and entering the sea, particularly for children, elderly visitors and people who are not accustomed to pebbled beaches.

🌊 The Water and Seabed

The waters of Mykali are clean and highly transparent, with colours ranging from pale blue close to the shore to turquoise and deeper blue towards the strait. The pebbled seabed is clearly visible from the surface, especially on days when the sea is calm.

During the first few metres, the seabed consists mainly of pebbles and small stones. In several sections, finer material or sand appears after the initial pebbled entry zone, creating a more comfortable surface for swimming.

The depth generally increases gradually, although variations may occur from one section to another because of the beach’s considerable length. Visitors should check the selected entry point, especially when accompanying young children.

🌬️ Wind and Waves

The sea at Mykali is usually calm and provides good conditions for swimming. The beach can, however, be affected by wind on certain days, although this does not mean that strong waves are constantly present.

Conditions are not identical along the entire coastline. The more exposed sections may experience greater surface movement, while other areas remain calmer.

Northern winds may blow from the land towards the strait. Visitors using a windsurf board, small boat or floating equipment should therefore check the wind direction carefully and avoid moving far from the coast without experience and suitable support.

🌍 Views towards Asia Minor and the Mykali Strait

The beach faces the coast of Asia Minor and Mount Mykali opposite, from which it takes its name. Clear atmospheric conditions often provide an unobstructed view of the Mykali Peninsula on the present-day Turkish coast.

The Mykali Strait separates Samos from Asia Minor and is approximately 1.6 kilometres wide at its narrowest point. The view of the passage, passing ships and the mountainous coastline opposite gives Mykali a distinctive geographical character.

🤿 Swimming and Snorkelling

The beach’s great length and clear water allow comfortable swimming in different areas without all visitors gathering around the organised facilities.

The pebbled seabed, small fish and individual areas with stones or marine vegetation provide interest for exploration with a mask and snorkel. The more natural sections towards the ends of the beach usually offer greater variety on the seabed.

The coastline does not contain continuous rocky shores or impressive underwater caves. Snorkelling is mainly suited to relaxed observation of the seabed and small marine life.

🏄 Water Activities

Seasonal water activities operate in selected organised sections. Depending on the location and period, sailing, windsurfing, canoeing, small-boat rental, water skiing, jet skiing and inflatable towable activities may be available.

These activities are not offered along the entire coastline, and their operation may change from one summer season to another. Confirming availability at the specific section of Mykali before visiting is advisable.

Easy road access, the generally gradual increase in depth, organised areas and food options make Mykali suitable for families. Its great length also allows visitors to select an area with less activity and more available space.

The pebbles may make walking and playing difficult for very young children. Water shoes, a thick beach mat or a padded beach mattress provide greater comfort.

Permanent lifeguard coverage has not been confirmed along the entire coastline. Children must remain under continuous adult supervision, even in areas where the seabed slopes gradually.

☂️ Organisation and Available Facilities

Mykali is partially organised, with most facilities concentrated in the central section and in front of dining establishments or tourist accommodation. Umbrellas and sun loungers are available, while large parts of the coastline remain free for visitors using their own equipment.

Showers, changing rooms and toilets have been recorded at the organised areas. These facilities are not continuously available along the entire 3.2-kilometre coastline and are connected with the seasonal businesses or establishments serving each individual section.

🍽️ Restaurants and Beach Bars

Restaurants, coffee establishments and seasonal beach bars operate along Mykali. These options are mainly concentrated around the organised areas and allow visitors to remain throughout the day without travelling to Psili Ammos or Pythagoreio.

Opening periods, operating hours and the conditions for using sun loungers may differ between businesses and summer seasons. Immediate access to drinking water or food should not be assumed in the more distant free sections.

🌿 Free and Quieter Sections

Although Mykali is included among the organised beaches of Samos, a large part of it remains free. East and west of the central zone, there are sections without continuous rows of sun loungers.

These areas are suitable for visitors who prefer greater distance from businesses and water activities. Because natural shade is limited, a personal umbrella and the necessary supplies are required.

🚗 Access by Car or Motorcycle

Mykali is easily reached through the road network from Samos Town, Palaiokastro and Pythagoreio. The main route ends near the central organised section, while smaller roads serve different points along the extensive coast.

No hiking or descent along a difficult path is necessary. Access is more practical by car or motorcycle because the distances between the different sections of the beach are considerable.

🅿️ Parking Area

Free parking options are available close to the organised sections and the main road access points. In some areas, spacious natural or prepared parking spaces are located near the coast.

The exact distance from the vehicle to the sea depends on the section selected by the visitor. On busier days, the spaces close to the most popular beach bars and restaurants fill first.

♿ Accessibility

Road access to points very close to several parts of the coast makes the beach easier to visit for elderly people and those unable to walk long distances.

A continuous stable pathway across the pebbles, a dedicated ramp, an independent sea-access system or SEATRAC infrastructure have not been confirmed. Independent wheelchair movement across the pebbled shore is difficult, so the beach should not be listed as fully accessible for people with disabilities.

🌞 The Atmosphere of the Beach

Mykali combines different experiences along the same coastline. The atmosphere is livelier close to the organised areas, with sun loungers, food and water activities, while the ends offer greater tranquillity and a more natural character.

The extensive coastline usually prevents a strong feeling of overcrowding. Views towards Asia Minor, clear waters and the choice between organised and free sections make it suitable for spending many hours beside the sea.

Swim in different parts of the extensive coastline and select the section with the entry point, wave conditions and level of organisation that best match your needs.

Use a mask and snorkel in the more natural areas, where the seabed contains more stones and marine vegetation.

Enjoy the view towards Mount Mykali opposite and watch the ships passing through the strait.

Combine swimming with food, coffee or a drink at one of the organised sections of the coast.

Walk along the beach and observe the transitions between the organised and more natural zones.
