Avlakia Beach is located on the northern coast of Samos, within the seaside settlement of the same name, between Kokkari and Tsabou Beach. Contrary to what was stated in the previous text, it is not one large sandy beach, but a series of three small, consecutive pebble beaches, situated among the houses, accommodation units and seaside businesses of the settlement.

The beaches are small and narrow, measuring approximately 85, 52 and 25 metres in length, with an average width of around six metres. Their limited size creates a more intimate and peaceful atmosphere. However, the area cannot be described as deserted or isolated, since the beaches are located directly within an inhabited settlement.

Avlakia is located approximately four kilometres northwest of Kokkari, along the main coastal road connecting Samos Town with Karlovasi. Official tourism information for Samos gives an approximate distance of 14.4 kilometres from Samos Town and 4.4 kilometres from the village of Vourliotes.

The settlement and its beaches are situated along a distinctive curve of the northern coastline, beneath the green foothills of Mount Ampelos, also known as Karvounis. Pine-covered and rocky slopes rise above the coast, creating a striking contrast between the green mountain landscape and the blue waters of the northern Aegean.

🏘️ Beaches within the settlement of Avlakia

The beaches are not located outside a residential area. The three small stretches of coast are scattered throughout the seaside settlement of Avlakia, with houses, small hotels, rented rooms, restaurants and cafés situated only a short distance from the water. In some places, the courtyards and tables of local businesses extend almost to the shoreline.

Avlakia is an officially recognised settlement that was attached to the Community of Vourliotes in 1918. Today, it belongs administratively to the Municipality of Eastern Samos and remains geographically and administratively connected with the wider Vourliotes area.

🌊 The coastline and beach composition

The beaches of Avlakia consist mainly of small and medium-sized pebbles. There is no golden sand, so the previous description must be removed completely. In some places, finer gravel or material moved by the waves may appear, but the general character of the coastline is clearly pebbly.

The narrow width of the beaches means that the available space for towels and personal umbrellas is not unlimited. On most days, visitor numbers remain moderate. However, during peak periods or when sun loungers occupy the most convenient areas, the amount of free space may become limited. The beach is mainly used by local residents and guests staying in nearby accommodation.

💎 Water and swimming conditions

The water at Avlakia is clean and transparent, with blue and turquoise-green shades that change according to the light and sea conditions. The pebbles and rocky seabed help the water retain a high level of clarity, particularly when there are no strong waves.

The coastline is considered relatively sheltered because the headland on the northern side of the settlement provides some protection and often keeps the water calmer than at other, more exposed beaches along northern Samos. This does not mean that the sea is always completely calm. During strong northerly winds, the entire northern coast may experience waves and stronger water movement across the pebbles.

The seabed is mainly pebbly and rocky. Its slope and shape may vary between the three small beaches, as each section is affected differently by waves and by the winter movement of pebbles.

Water shoes are particularly useful for children, older visitors and anyone who finds it difficult to walk over rounded pebbles. They also help when entering and leaving the sea, where the stones may be slippery.

🌳 Natural shade

One of the main advantages of Avlakia is the natural shade. Trees located behind and between the small beach sections provide shaded areas for a significant part of the day, particularly near the edges of the beaches and close to the accommodation units. Avlakia is recorded as a beach area with plenty of natural shade from trees.

The amount of shade is not the same on all three beaches and does not remain fixed throughout the day. Visitors who specifically want a place beneath a tree should arrive relatively early, as the best shaded areas are limited.

The beach is officially described as semi-organised. A limited number of sun loungers and umbrellas are available in certain areas, usually in connection with nearby accommodation units or food and drink businesses. It is not a fully organised beach with continuous rows of umbrellas and sun loungers along the entire coastline.

Exact availability, charges and whether the sun loungers are reserved for customers of a particular hotel or business may change from season to season. For this reason, the listing should state that there is a limited and seasonal availability of umbrellas and sun loungers.

Unlike the earlier description of an isolated natural destination, Avlakia has tavernas, restaurants and cafés located directly beside the small beaches. Visitors can find options for fish, seafood, Greek and Samian cuisine, coffee and drinks, with some tables positioned very close to the sea.

The businesses are small in scale and match the peaceful character of the settlement. Although most operate normally during summer, their opening days and hours may be limited outside the main tourist season.

🛏️ Accommodation in the settlement

The settlement has small hotels, apartments and rented rooms, many of which are located directly opposite or only a few metres from the beach. This makes Avlakia a suitable choice for visitors who want to stay close to the sea without the greater activity and visitor numbers of Kokkari.

The area is not a large tourist resort. Accommodation is mainly provided by small units and family-run businesses, helping the settlement maintain a quieter and more personal atmosphere.

Avlakia can be considered suitable for families, mainly because of the natural shade, the relatively sheltered water and the immediate access to food, drinking water and accommodation. The Samos Hoteliers Association describes the coastline as small, shady and suitable for families.

Care is still required because the coastline is pebbly, the surface is not smooth everywhere and no permanently confirmed lifeguard service has been identified. Young children should be supervised at all times, particularly when it is windy or when waves are present.

🤿 Swimming and snorkelling

The clarity of the water and the rocky edges of the small beaches create good conditions for relaxed snorkelling. Close to the rocks, visitors may observe the stony seabed, small fish and the marine life that develops around the stones.

There are no organised snorkelling activities or water sports. Visitors use their own equipment and should always remain aware of passing boats, the wind and changes in sea conditions.

🚗 Road access

Access is particularly easy because Avlakia is located directly on the Samos–Karlovasi National Road. No dirt road, hiking trail or long descent to the beach is required. From Kokkari, visitors follow the coastal road towards Karlovasi, while those arriving from the west follow the same road in the opposite direction towards Kokkari and Samos Town.

The road is paved, but it passes through bends and directly through the small settlement. Drivers should reduce their speed and watch for pedestrians, parked vehicles and cars entering or leaving accommodation units and tavernas.

🚌 Access by bus

Official tourism information states that Avlakia is served by Samos KTEL buses because it is located on the main road between Samos Town and Karlovasi. There is a bus stop within the settlement or immediately beside it.

Routes and frequencies vary according to the season. Visitors should check the current timetable, especially when planning to return late in the afternoon or outside the main tourist period.

There are limited parking opportunities within and around the settlement, as well as spaces used by some accommodation businesses. However, there is no single large municipal parking facility serving all three small beaches. The narrow layout of the settlement makes parking more difficult during peak hours.

Vehicles should only be left in permitted areas, without blocking the main road, residential entrances or access to local businesses. During July and August, arriving early is recommended.

🥾 Walks and nearby routes

Short walks can be taken from Avlakia along the coastline and towards the nearby hills. Tsabou Beach lies to the west and, according to local tourism guides, may also be reached on foot in approximately 15 minutes along a short route that includes uphill and downhill sections.

To the east lie Kokkari, Tsamadou and Lemonakia, while further inland are Vourliotes, Manolates and the green mountain routes of Karvounis.
