A peaceful village hidden among the lush green slopes of Mount Karvounis

Kontaika is located in the northwestern part of Samos, in the inland area of Karlovasi. The village is built at an altitude of approximately 300 metres, surrounded by green hills and situated at the foothills of Mount Ampelos, also known as Karvounis. Its sheltered location keeps it almost entirely hidden from the sea, creating a peaceful and protected natural environment.

The village lies approximately 6–7 kilometres from Karlovasi and south of Ydroussa. Administratively, it belongs to the Municipality of Western Samos, while according to the 2021 census, it has 292 permanent residents.

Important: Kontaika should not be confused with Kontakaiika, which is a different and larger village located approximately 5 kilometres from Karlovasi.

🕰️ History and origin of the village’s name

According to local tradition, the village took its name from the first settler of the area, a shepherd named Konstantinos Kontos, who came from the village of Platanos and settled there around 1750. A small community gradually developed around this first settlement, eventually becoming the village known today as Kontaika.

The historical development of the village was closely connected to agriculture and the cultivation of the fertile surrounding land. The residents traditionally worked mainly in olive growing, viticulture and vegetable farming. In earlier times, tobacco was also cultivated in the area.

⛪ The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary

One of the most important landmarks of Kontaika is the parish church dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. The church stands prominently within the village, distinguished by its characteristic dome and impressive stone-built exterior.

The Byzantine-style church was built in 1895 and was designed by the architect Angelos Krinaios. The Nativity of the Virgin Mary is celebrated on 8 September, a date that remains one of the most important religious occasions for the village.

The historic church suffered serious damage during the devastating earthquake of 30 October 2020, which severely affected northwestern Samos and caused damage to many historic buildings throughout the wider region.

Kontaika retains the authentic character of a traditional agricultural village of Samos. Its houses are spread across the surrounding slopes, among courtyards, gardens, olive groves and vineyards, while narrow streets lead towards the village square and the older neighbourhoods of the settlement.

Everyday life follows a peaceful and unhurried rhythm, far from the busy tourist atmosphere of the island’s coastal resorts. The village square serves as a natural meeting point for residents and visitors, particularly during summer afternoons and evenings, when local celebrations and cultural events are held.

The village remains closely connected to the land, traditional farming and the production of the renowned Samian wine, offering visitors an authentic glimpse into life in the inland villages of Samos.

The countryside surrounding Kontaika is characterised by rich vegetation, olive groves, vineyards and green hills. The road leading to the village offers beautiful views of the Samian countryside, while the higher parts of the settlement provide views over the surrounding slopes and the villages of northwestern Samos.

A visit to Kontaika can easily be combined with excursions to Platanos, Ydroussa, Kosmadaioi and Karlovasi, creating an interesting driving route through the mountainous and agricultural landscape of western Samos.
